The Jelly Bean Virtual 10k: Race Report

I had not run since Sunday, because the weather has been sucktacular. And I am so not hard core. I can usually get away with a little juggling for the weather, since I only run 4 days a week.

Today when I set out, I was NOT set on doing my 10k. And I was for sure not RACING it. I figured I'd just run it for fun, and see how I was feeling...in about 5 seconds, my ipod was jacked up, so I stopped to fix it. After another half a mile I realized my left shoe was tied too tight, so I stopped to fix THAT. Gah. What else?

But after that? Bliss. I was feeling strong. I was running well. I started to push it. My prior 10k PR was 1:10ish (another race I just ran for fun, and I wasn't feeling great that day) and since then I'd run a 1:03 10k during a speedy training run, so I was going to aim for that.

When my 4th mile beeped in at 9:37 I decided to just go for it. Why not? I may as well push the hell out of it, just to see what that feels like, right? As a runner, I RARELY push hard enough. But today was going to be different.

There were a few walk breaks to catch my breath, but they never really affected my overall pace. I considered walking briefly at mile 6, but then I berated myself with IT'S ONLY 0.2 DAMMIT. It felt really good to be GASPING at the end of a run.

And you know what? I have yet to stop smiling because of it. I think I kind of like going fast!

Since I am an idiot and I was SO EXCITED to upload this run, I forgot to take a picture of my garmin, so this one's from the history. See that there on the upper left at the bottom? 1:01:41 baby. See just under that? That's overall pace. See what number it starts with? IT STARTS WITH A 9!!!!!

In all my sweaty gross glory, smiling like a goof. SO EXCITED.

You can see my race here, and my splits were 10:29, 10:23, 10:08, 9:37, 9:42, 9:34, 8:44 for the 0.2!!!!

Thanks so much to Jess for hosting an awesome race!

Now, if Spring wouldn't mind SHOWING UP, my life would be stellar...
