I decided to run this marathon almost on a whim. Not that I hadn't been thinking about it - I had been THINKING about it for years. But a few weeks back I just signed up online. Then I told my husband and everyone else I could think of telling. I needed to pay the money and tell everyone to hold myself accountable.
So I've been running for a couple of weeks now and it's getting a bit easier. My 39th birthday is on the horizon, so my husband got me a nike+ system for my ipod and the sport watch remote too as an early present. I calibrated the thing this morning (after running Tuesday without calibrating it and having it tell me I rand a half a mile further than I knew I had). Now, it's DARK here at 5:30AM and I swore the thing said I was running a 20 minute mile when I finished the calibration. 20 minutes. I could fucking WALK faster than that.
I came home very discouraged. A 20 minute mile meant I have light years to go to - I'd need to get SO MUCH faster besides building enough endurance to finish in under 6.5 hours (after which you don't qualify as finishing). I was bummed and feeling like a lost cause.
But when I uploaded my run to the Nike site, I realized that I ran a 12.39 minute mile. WAHOO! Not great, but respectable. I'd love to finish in under 5 hours, and now it looks like that is a possibility rather than a pipe dream.
I feel so much better!
