A Few More Thoughts On Splish Splash

Today I am not getting anything that I'd planned to get done accomplished, mostly because James has decided to vacillate wildly between super sweet and EXTREMELY EVIL. No preschool today - I think he's having belly issues.

A few random follow ups on Sunday:

- At the luau, I got to meet one of the girls who dressed up as a barmaid from the WI half marathon! She was super nice and it was fun to chat with her. I felt like I was talking to a celebrity, haha!

(I stole this picture from Michel's race recap - she had an awesome PR that day!)

- I am definitely going to attempt the immodium for my 20 this weekend. If I'd continued to run hard, I would have had to stop. It was only all the walking I did at the end that saved me from that. As it was, I narrowly made it home in time. Frustrating.

- I've heard a lot of complaints about the race, but seriously, I had the best time. I have to wonder how much of that is attitude? Or simply knowing I had people on the course? Or not having race expectations? I may have been more frustrated with the hills had I been attempting a PR. I don't know. As it was, I just had so much fun!

- Last year I commented to someone at one point about wanting to be able to rock a half marathon without it physically affecting me for days post race. I believe I am at that point. I ran Monday to work out the kinks, and it's all good. It feels good to be in good enough physical condition that a half marathon, which is no small feat, is not such a HUGE undertaking.

- The medal. *sigh* They could have done so much with the theme to make it WAY cooler. LIKE NOT USE A STICKER.

- I ran the first 8 miles at an average pace of 10:15. I had a good 2 or 3 in me after that too, minus the foot cramping. Past that, who knows? But I see a new half marathon PR in my future - I definitely have more to give to that distance.

  1. You ARE in awesome shape when a half is no big deal, because we all know it's a HUGE deal. Go you. Ugh, yeah the medal is baaad.

  2. I think a lot of enjoying a race is attitude. I've raced with people down to -40F, and they did complain one bit. We compared frosty face masks, drank finish line hot cocoa, and had a great time.

You definitely have a new PR soon :) Marathon training works wonders for speeding up your half mar.

  4. I love your comment about rocking a Half and feeling good the next day. That's exactly how I felt with my last one!! I can't believe the medal was a sticker?!?!

  5. Being able to bang out a Half without needing extended downtime is huge. Way to go. If I can track down a good Half to try in the July timeframe I'll see if I'm in the same boat.

Pretty weak effort on that medal. Don't they realize the lure of the bling?

  6. You're my inspiration for making running a priority post-children. Right now, because Gavin is still so young and we're really still figuring out our routines, it's so hard for me to run consistently. So, I'm giving myself a break - I've gotten back into running and that's good. It's OK if I don't have time to set big goals. But, someday, like you, I'd love to still be a great mom AND make time for myself to run. It will happen! In the meantime, congrats on all your personal accomplishments and new discoveries with running!

  7. A sticker medal? Huh.
I have never heard of the immodium for a long run, but am thinking that is a rockin' idea. Especially after a few gu's!

  10. That's a bummer about the medal:/ seriously?
what are you using to fuel with? I'm only asking because my stomach cannot handle Gu anymore. I eat only salt tabs, jelly beans and jolly ranchers. As soon as I try and eat a Gu or a chomp, it's instant bathroom. Just a thought!

  11. I think you nailed it about that attitude. Someone I know who ran Chicago bitched about the whole race. But she bitches about everything.

And that is so awesome you can run this far now and feel good! That is my goal too - that is why I try to keep up a long distance base. It doesn't always work though!

A sticker medal is kind of a bummer, but it's better than a pair of gloves!
