So I wrote my December goals last post, and my first week was mostly successful. I did get 3 runs in. But I only did one core workout (with my attempt at yoga) so I need to get serious about that. Having a new toy (my Garmin 305) made my runs pretty fun, since I am a data junkie. My run yesterday was not nearly as fun - I can do running in the cold, but add wind and a wind chill of 12 degrees, and suddenly its more tough than fun. But I was still glad I got out there. And my kids had a ball playing in all our new snow!

It started late Friday night and snowed most of Saturday. It was great packing snow, and the kids pummeled John with snowballs until he surrendered. Jenna finally relented and asked me for snow pants and boots (she had been waffling on whether or not snow pants and boots were cool, but decided that fun in the snow wins out). I could hardly keep Julia and Jack in the house - love that!
Saturday morning Jenna and I got to drive all over in the snow - she had a blood draw and an orthodontic check scheduled. I was thankful that there was very little traffic, since the roads were not so fun to drive on at that point. We finished it off with a nice breakfast at Panera. I really crave one on one time with each of my kids, so it was nice to hang with her for the morning.
Saturday night John and I escaped our kids for a while and attended the wedding of the daughter of one of his coworkers. I wasn't all that keen about going (wedding present plus babysitter for the afternoon/evening equals expensive, especially this time of year) but we ended up having a really nice time. We came home to find that our babysitter had brought over ornaments for the kids to craft - they turned out so cute! We are blessed to have such a good sitter to rely on. She's fantastic and the kids adore her.
Sunday I shopped a bit (I found a little tree for super cheap - since we are not going to be home at all for Christmas, and since the basement is a crazy mess with stuff stashed random places, I couldn't bring myself to put up the big tree this year) and then headed out for my run. My new wool socks did fairly well, but my toes still were pretty cold. I'm a winter running work-in-progress. I think next time I go out in below 20 degree weather, I'll try one of those neck warmers that I can tuck my face into. The wind was wicked.
It's a new week! It's going to be a COLD one here...I'm just thankful that the crud is mostly GONE. YAY! Running in the cold with chest crud was NOT FUN.
Bobbi--you're doing awesome! I am going to try running for the first time in 3 months (!) tomorrow at the Y. what are the wool running socks you use for cold weather?
ReplyDeleteBalaclavas are a godsend in Chicago winters - roll up, pul ldown, pull up over nose, lots of options. Running outside you might want to invest in some waterproof running shoes!
ReplyDelete12 with the wind chill? I swear it felt even colder to me. I came back in for my balaclava. Times like these I am thankful I am not training for Boston! It was so icy too!
ReplyDeleteI wear trail shoes in the cold. The wind doesn't blow through them.
I am so fortunate that I rarely have to run in weather that cold; just if I go insane & visit my parents in the winter time! :) 20 is about the lowest we get here, and that's usually the overnight low, so I manage to avoid it. I'm usually more concerned about staying dry!
ReplyDeleteNice job on getting it done, though! It's hard making that transition. When I moved to Portland, I wouldn't run if it was below 40; then if it was below 30; last year I did a few runs in the mid-20s, and I think that can be my limit for awhile now!
I definitely recommend the Under Armour Balclava!
ReplyDeleteJenna must have felt special spending one on one time with you! I still do with my mom or dad :)
I think weekly training posts are a great idea (you may have guessed that one!).
I ran last week with a head cold = FAIL! It was terrible! i bet the chest thing was awful as well! Now, way to stay on track! I'm supposed to be running right now...!
ReplyDeleteI love getting one on one time with my kids. I know exactly what you mean about that.
ReplyDeleteMy kids were out all weekend in the snow too. It was so much fun. I don't like cold weather and this wind is killing me. I suppose that is what I should expect living in this area but I still don't like it.
I haven't been running but hopefully my doctor today will have some ideas to help my knee/foot issue so I can get back to it!
3 runs .. not to bad. The first cold days are always the worse then you get used to it (not).
ReplyDeleteWay to get 3 runs in! It seems so hard to do when the weather is yucky!
ReplyDeleteI have been wearing wool socks and that seems to work good but it's only been 25 with a wind chill of 15. Not sure how they will do when its even colder.
ReplyDeleteI like running in the cold but NOT in the wind. I'll take the treadmill over wind. Good for you for braving the weather!
ReplyDeleteBurrrrr. Denver's been blessed to not have much snow. Yet! Good job with the runs and keeping at it!!
ReplyDeleteI saw on Adam's blog (??) that you are doing Grandma's Marathon? This is one on my radar, if my heel will cooperate - would be fun to meet you there!! ;)
Hope you got my exchange email!! :)
You know, if you want something to get out, just send it to Wikileaks ... they wouldn't be stopped by Comcast not having Internet!
ReplyDeleteStay warm. Although your weather seems quite enjoyable to me right now.
