Ballad of the Injured Runner (aka WAH WAH WAH!)

So yesterday, I got an email from my friend Sara (who now blogs with her bestie, Dana, here) wondering where the hell I've been.

I'm here. But I'm not running. So I've been rather morose lately. Getting cranky up in here.

Last fall I managed to do something weird to my shoulder. Probably in strength class. And at first, it was just kind of annoying. And achy. I wouldn't classify it as pain, but it was there.

After a couple months it was more pain. Like my rotator cuff is JACKED kind of pain.

So I ran New Years Day (because it was snowing, yo. Big puffy fat flaked snow. Who can say no to that on the brink of a brand new year? Not this girl.) and I regretted it for a whole week.

You know that stupid someecard "I really regret that run. Said no runner ever."? Yeah, they were obviously not talking about an injured runner, because runners are weird. And stupid.

Since then, I've taken the entire month off. I feel like a fat lazy lump. I cry for no apparent reason. My family is starting to hate my guts.

But I have good friends who check on me. And good friends (MUAH Riyanti!!) on the IR list who will invite me into their home for basically the whole day so we can at least be injured together.

And I'll be heading to the doctor if it doesn't improve, I promise. But I figured some good old fashioned rest was a good place to start.

This hasn't stopped me from registering for races. I DNS'd my first race of the year (sad but smart) because it was a 10k trail race on icy hills. I also have the Soldier Field 10 miler and the Wisconsin half and then Grandma's marathon (4th time's the charm!) so I need to heal up so I can get busy. I have a big year ahead of me!

But until I heal, I will put all my energy into cooking real food here (long story) and not putting ALL THE FOODZ IN MY MAW.

Wish me luck :)

  1. You are doing the smart thing by resting, as much as it effing sucks! And yeah, I hate that "no one regretted a run ever," bs. I have. When I got out and am already pissy and the wind makes me more upset? Yep, regret that. And regretting a run when injured and testing things out? TOTALLY been there too.

Keep updating us! And keep finding things to do to get your mind off of it. You are doing great with your cooking this year. Make that book spreadsheet! Go for a walk! Come over and you can use my bike trainer!

You will totally be healed and ready for your spring/summer races! :) And then you can come back to strength too. Maybe Friday is the better idea... buah ha ha. JK. Not.

  2. Injuries suck but hopefully you will heal up and be able to run pain free soon. Add some walking as your work out if you need to get some energy out if that does not give you pain.

    1. Thanks! I absolutely need to start walking, if for nothing else then to get outside!

  3. Yay! It worked. I hate being jacked up. As runners know, every little tinge is a Potential Looming Catastrophic Event in our minds, and even worse when they come true :(
At least you have time to make tacos!?

  5. Love this update and you. I sometimes regret runs ... like, when I shit my pants. I never feel glad that I got in a few poo covered miles. Blech. People should shut up (says me who has been a morose, cranky bitch all week and is likely to be for a while. It's fun). Eating real food can be fun. I need to get better, especially after listening the latest JM podcast.

Would you like me to talk about me some more? Because I am apparently really good about doing so in this comment. Blech.

So ... rest is good. I'm glad you are taking care of yourself. And a shoulder injury is probably the worse because you can't do a lot - no bike, no running, no stairmaster. Get better soon.

  6. I loved it when you came over the other day! I'm glad it did you as much good as it did for me. Not running and cutting calories has made this nerd mom a momster. I'm going to the doctor next week. You should go. All the cool kids go. My feet have got to break out of shoe prison.

If you need to complain, other kids to distract you or a good salad, you know where I live.

  7. Blah. Sorry about the shoulder. I know it's hard, but the longer you rest, the sooner it will heal. The doc will offer surgery. Massage will help.

  8. Oh no! I wondered where you've been. If you've already taken a month off, you should probably go to the doctor now and not wait longer. Gotta fix yourself up so you can run ASAP.

PS- I totally understand about the puffy Charlie Brown snow. Even if both my legs were broken, I'd still go run in that.

    1. I know - and I will. Friday the 24th I will either be MUCH better or I'll be calling the doctor. Rest is helping, but it' only been this month (so 2 weeks so far).

that snow is the BEST. makes me fel like a little kid. I'm totally ignoring that it's snowing like that right now ;)

    1. I will! It is so tough for me (I have 2 super picky kiddos) and I get frustrated, but we are making progress on that front. One step at a time :)

  10. If you lived near me, I'd invite you over every single day so I could listen to you complain and follow it up with a big hug....because I've been there and I know how suckville it is. Come to Colorado so I can hug you, damn it!

Put the Cheetos down. Heal up (fast). And enjoy those snowflakes now because 4th time IS the charm (I have proof :)) and you'll be working your butt off soon and no time for enjoyment!! :)
