My day included weeding, mowing, a Menard's run, and some cleaning, topped off with a birthday party at a local park. All 6 of us went to the park, and we ate pizza for dinner there. And cookies. Yum. I ate too much pepperoni pizza. I regretted that lots later.
We got home with 4 whiny kids and started to get everyone cleaned up. Then I did a quick change, and headed out the door, intending on 3 warm up miles followed by the 5k. The first mile was AGONY. I hurt. I was burping pizza. My legs felt like lead. It almost felt like I was at mile 20 of the marathon. I convinced myself that I could skip the warm up and call it a 5k recovery run.
But then? Halfway through mile 2? I was feeling OK. Still burping pizza (I never really got past that) but my legs were getting into it. I stopped my warm up at 2.5 miles and reset my watch. (2.5 miles: 26:49. Average pace: 10:44)
Here's where I need some work: mile 1 was crazy fast for me. I was gasping and had to walk lots. I spent mile 2 trying to recover from mile 1, and it ended up being the slowest of the bunch. By mile 3, I'd found a bit of a groove, but I was over it at this point - I wanted to be DONE.
The details? Click here if you want to see it all.
Final time: 30:15 Just short of my 30 minute goal, but an unofficial PR!
Average pace: 9:45
mile 1: 9:43
mile 2: 9:55
mile 3: 9:46
last 0.1: 8:30

Not too bad! I can definitely do better, but I'll take this 1 week out from a marathon. Thanks, Adam, for hosting a fun race! (and sorry - no bib - my printer is dead)

Bobbi, your blog inspired me to do this virtual race too!!
ReplyDeleteI did it this morning, it was actually the only thing that got me out the door today!
Congrats on getting it done after such a busy day, and a PR too! I don't know how you busy moms do it all.
Very nice work! All the more impressive considering your pre-race fueling. I'm amazed by all the folks who fuel up the day before a race with pizza, or the Ultra runners who eat it during a race. I eat a few pieces of pizza and I'm still tasting it a week later.
ReplyDeleteGetting this done with that busy schedule was no small feat. Getting a PR on top of that is great. Best of luck in the marathon!
You are amazing! Great job on your PR - especially one week out from your marathon. You are a beast!! Proud of you!
ReplyDeleteI think I have that same shirt, in pink and in black. I think mine makes me faster, looks like it does the same for you :)
ReplyDeleteNow you just have to go and make that 5K PR official in a road race. You did awesome for how close it was to your marathon. (ps- I don't believe in taking tons of time off after races either..for me, it feels like the soreness lasts longer if I don't run.)
I can't believe you pulled off that time only a week out from a marathon. I could still barely stand up off the pisser one week out!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the PR lady!
Amazing job on this PR! Especially a week out from marathon, and after a pizza dinner!
ReplyDeleteI love the way you kicked it up a notch for the final .1 - awesome!! I could never run after pizza, let alone set an unofficial PR, great job!
ReplyDeleteGreat job! That's amazing just after your marathon!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on a PR! Especially with the pre-run pizza!
ReplyDeleteAlso super impressed with your post-pizza PR! Way to go :)
ReplyDeleteNice job, Bobbi! Especially a week out from your marathon. I was just thinking about going out for a gentle jog at that point after mine. :)
ReplyDeleteAnyone who can run after eating pizza gets a big thumbs up from me!
ReplyDeleteBobbi, your continuing accomplishments are just awesome; I love seeing you get faster and run longer.
Congrats on the PR! Burping pizza and all! I think you have many PRs in your near future. I'm totally coveting your purple top. Saw it yesterday at a running store and had to be physically removed from the store by the Caveman...need to go back and get it.
ReplyDeleteAwesome race!
ReplyDeleteExcellent run. You can say you wore a "virtual" race bib!
ReplyDeleteMmmmm, pizza. BLEH, pizza taste while RUNNING. Been there for sure.
ReplyDeleteBut, you cranked through it!! Nice work!
Great job! So sorry to hear about the pizza coming back for another round! I have the same problem with starting out too fast! Wearing my Garmin helps with that.
ReplyDeleteYou did awesome considering your day and the pizza! And that you are recovering from a marathon!!! I wish I could have run with you. Do you think you will do the Grayslake 5K this Saturday if you are back? I may be pacing my BiL.
