Spoiler alert: That CERTAINLY did not happen. As a matter of fact, I walked at least 8 miles of this one. But I had a great weekend, and I didn't embarrass myself "much" bodily function wise, and I got to run.
It's all good.
Where to start? After much secret giggling, outfit planning, and weather stalking, Kim and I headed to Indiana Friday afternoon. I kinda sorta talked her into doing this craziness with me (or vice versa? I'm not really sure, haha) and since she knew another Kim who lives nearby, we ended up with a place to crash before the race.
Spending time with Kim and her husband, Dave, and their son, Leo, was wonderful. Their house and their vibe is warm and inviting, and they went out of their way to make us feel right at home. It was so fun eating and chatting and getting to know each other, and Leo was so stinking cute and I SO enjoyed loving on a toddler again. There are not nearly enough babies in my life now!
After not sleeping at all (both of us! darn pre-race excitement!) we got up and moving early. Had a little something to eat, and then headed out the door for the hour drive to the race start.

Early morning and ready to go :)

I stole all Kim's pictures! Shamelessly! Wasn't the sky so cool!?
We got many many comments on our outfits. Which were pretty much all Kim's fault. We felt very patriotic!

We looked great!

We lined up in the back. The blue flags? The start. Small races rule.
We were basically kicking all kinds of ass.
(10:03, 10:03, 9:55, 9:59, 9:58, 9:59, 9:51, 9:55, 9:57, 10:11, 10:23, 10:12, 10:32)
So, yeah, out half split was 2:13. We were killing it.
The second half got hard. Right away. The sun came out and the wind picked up. We both were saying how tough it was feeling to hold the same pace.
And my stomach had started speaking up at mile 12 or so.
I considered stopping at the half - we ran past the start/finish line so there was the big bank of potties right there. But for whatever reason, I decided to keep on keeping on.
What can I say? I am not so smart.
We made it through the 14th mile, but now I was hurting. I was worried. I wasn't sure if I was going to make it to a potty in time. It was ugly. I was praying that the next aid station would have a potty. But it didn't.
We were getting ready to turn the corner just past mile 15, and the aid station was set up right at the turn. And I didn't see one. Somehow, Kim knew how bad it was, and knew that I wouldn't ask for help.
So she did what any good running friend would do, and flagged down a guy in his yard and asked him if I could use his bathroom. I was WAY embarrassed for about a half a second and then my insides reminded me that HE WAS BEING KIND and TAKE ADVANTAGE STUPID. He couldn't have been nicer about it and I'll be forever thankful to him and his wife. And Kim.
One more big YAY for small races.
After that, I was feeling much better and thought I was still in it. Kim, however, was NOT feeling it so she sent me on ahead and told me to go get it. That worked for about a half mile. Then, my stomach was kind enough to let me know that it was IN NO WAY done with me for the day. I would run for a while, and it would twist up in knots. I'd walk to loosen it up. And then run again.
Lather, rinse, repeat.
We ran mile 18 on this:
Yeah. Effing big rock gravel road, oh how I hate you. I couldn't get my footing right. The wind was beating the shit out of me. I was sucking. My stomach hurt. And after I turned off of it? I let my race go. I accepted that it wasn't my day. And I decided that if it was going to suck? I may as well be hanging with my friend.
It wasn't long before she caught up to me and was feeling bad that it wasn't my day. But she was having issues of her own...that gravel jacked up her knee pretty bad. Bad enough that she was limping. So we walked. And walked. We talked to people. We cheered for people. We hung out with Jenny and Jeff for a while (who were also struggling) until Jeff decided that walking hurt worse than shuffling so we let them go.
At mile 23, though, we got to see Kimberly and Miles (who'd been waiting for us for ENTIRELY too long) and I was SO happy they waited :)
"It's OK, I poop my pants too!" - she had no idea how apt that was this day!
And then, after having to skip the beer stop (I SO wanted that beer) we were almost done. Kimberly and Miles went to the finish line to cheer us in, which was awesome. We managed to run the last little bit.
stole these from Kimberly - it was a "Bobbi and ALL THE KIMS" kind of weekend!
And then we hung out and visited at the finish line for a little bit. It was great meeting Kimberly and Miles (who was the best high-fiver ever!) but I was beat. After a bit, when we couldn't find the YMCA offering showers to runners, we decided to trek back to Kim's again for a quick shower before hitting the road for home.
DONE!
On the way home, Kim was worried that I had regrets. But I don't. Not one. I tried, and that's all we can do on any given day. I'm happy I got to hang out with my friend and meet new people and run in a new state. I gave it one last go for the year and it didn't go my way, but I had a great time trying and so it's still a win.
Moving on from marathons for a while. This body is tired. But I'll be back....

Yay for secret marathons! I hate when my stomach decides to misbehave. It's always at the worst times.
ReplyDeleteoh, yes, ALWAYS...
Deleteoy. I'm sorry it just didn't work out for you both. I looked up this race and I should "make" my husband do it since it's near his brothers in Indiana and he needs to focus on something being a veteran for that day.
ReplyDelete2014 - come back year!
http://www.veteransmarathon.com/ - it really is so well done! and they have a half too!
DeleteYou and your secret marathons - I feel like we're soul mates. There are a million sympathetic things i could say right now about how every bad race makes us stronger, but you're smart and you know that, So i will instead leave you with this. Somehow, i manage to pee myself a little bit at every marathon. I don't even know how it happens. Marathons are gross. But you are awesome! :)
ReplyDeleteYOU are awesome! Calf cramps and travelling and a giant PR? you are my hero!
DeleteThat sounds like one helluva successful race to me! Friends, jackets AND medals - awesome! Sorry it was the race you were looking for, but it sounds like you gave it everything you got, and I think that is what matters most!
ReplyDeleteI'll keep chasing it :) That's the thing - the finish time is only ONE SMALL PART of what makes a race successful. Can't wait to see you!
Delete*wasn't. Oh, I forgot to mention how cute and funny your cheering section was!
ReplyDeleteWhile reading this, a scene from Bridesmaids flashed through my head... LOL Please tell me you've seen that. "Oh, you're really doing it, aren't ya? You're just shittin' in the street."
ReplyDeletebwahahahahaha! perfect!
DeleteCongrats on finishing your secret marathon! I love the sign in the stroller. Hilarious!
ReplyDeleteSorry the 2nd half wasn't what you wanted but it's another marathon and you got a good half marathon in there too! :)
ReplyDeleteWay to hang in there and finish!!! And thank God for the friendly spectator on the course who was kind enough to let you use the bathroom. Congrats on kicking butt on a tough day!
ReplyDeleteWeekend of Kims for sure! So so glad you came. And so proud of how you took on that race and finished!! Love ya, Bobbi.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great attitude to have about this race!
ReplyDeleteOh girl. I am clenching just reading this. So sorry that marathon within didn't come out. But it WILL! You know it. Still looks like fun though running with Kim though. Is that Kim from Healthy Strides?
ReplyDeleteGirl, you made it, and I think that in itself is an amazing feat! Congrats!
ReplyDeleteOH, my gosh...I so feel your pain. Thank goodness my marathon had porta potties every 2 miles!! Why do our stomachs hate running so much when it lets them eat more?
ReplyDeleteYou're all kinds of amazing...just jumping into a marathon because, what the hell why not...you totally rock!
And the Bridesmaids reference...classic!
Thank goodness your survived, it sounds like your stomach was just not having it for the second half. Congrats on finishing another marathon!
ReplyDeleteAwe Bobbi!! Either way its another one in the books! Congrats! And how exciting to get to meet Kim and Miles!! =)
ReplyDeleteGreat job! Sounds like a tough race. I heard about it from another runner I know. Congrats!
ReplyDeleteRunning with stomach issues is uncomfortable - I'm sorry you had to do it for half of the race :( I have no doubt that you'll get redemption on the marathon soon!
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry it wasn't your day, and you didn't get your race. Your half split was AWESOME! I am so incredibly proud of you for sticking it through and I'm not sure I'd be so strong. I can definitely say that I was not waiting out there too long. Not even a second too long. I was so excited to cheer you on. And if I have a typo it's ecause I'm watching "magic Mike" as Miles naps. So glad to finally meet you, and I look forward to a better race in 2013.
ReplyDeleteI have totally had that during races, I know how you feel. How brave of your friend to ask to use a bathroom! I have obviously gone on the side of the road, but during a road race, yep, I'd be clenching.
ReplyDeleteIt'll be better next time!!
Sounds like you and I have had similar race experiences this year - I just haven't ran to my potential either ... but you will! That gravel road at 18 does look a little skiddish, good job on getting through it.
ReplyDeleteReading this race report, I want to do it ALL OVER AGAIN!
ReplyDeleteNot!
Okay, just the roadtrip and first HM part. Ha ha ha ha ha.
What an adventure. I am so happy we got to do it together. I think we should do some halves together this year, no?
I was laughing about us staying up all night and what we said to each other about it the next day ("if we would have been with our husbands" ha ha ha ha ha).
I am proud of you for giving it a go and so honored to be there! Yeah, it was me pushing you a lot. And there was definitely a lot of giggling. We need something new to giggle about. Well, SBC, then something new after that :)
ya know what? sometimes those kinds of races are the most fun. and lets face it, they give us great stories to tell. :-)
ReplyDeleteyou rocked it just the same!
luuuvvv your outfits!
xo
Sorry that your secret race did not go as hoped!!! I have no doubt that you will have a great marathon at some point! But for now, rest up and relax! You deserve it!!! You are awesome!! Congrats!!!
ReplyDeleteBobbi, I HEART you!! You are the absolute bomb. I'll do this race with you next year. For realsies. We'll wear cute clothes and laugh and not worry about our sensitive/crabby guts (because we faithfully practiced our kegels and other nether-region clenching skills). It will be awesome!!!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, girl - I am just starting to walk normally again after Chicago, I can't believe you ran another marathon!!! You are such a rock star!!!
ReplyDeleteGive your body the rest it deserves, then rebuild slowly and I know you will get that illustrious time you so desire. Just gotta do it slowly with enough rest.
I like rural marathons also sometimes, they are definitely so peaceful. I'm glad you had a fun time with your friend and a positive experience overall. You guys looked absolutely adorable, too. Congratulations sweet girl!!
xo
Oh. My. God. I can't believe you just went out and ran another marathon, just like that. You are absolutely amazing.
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry to hear that you didn't have the race that you wanted. But no matter what, you are an incredible and very inspiring runner. HUGE congratulations on finishing yet another marathon and for pushing through what sounded like very, very challenging circumstances!!!
If this is the Veterans in Columbia City, IN this race is good for a half not a full. That last half is BRUTAL. Always windy and sooooooo hard to keep moving. This is about 30 minutes from my parents house and I was sooooo close to going for a redemption run last year after Chicago & another 90 degree marathon day and I just knew this race was too hard to feel better about myself as a runner. Great job getting it done and don't feel bad about this at all. This race kills a lot of great runners who don't have bathroom issues. Hugs!
ReplyDeleteWhat a positive post! I love it! I did a half last weekend. Not my day. I moped for a day. Your approach is so much better! Last Sat was just not my day. Time to get on with it!
ReplyDeleteSometimes we have to let our bodies rest. You did great lady!
ReplyDeleteI love your attitude Bobbi...you are a great inspiration to me. I love following your training :) Congrats on completing this marathon despite the issues.
ReplyDeleteYou have done amazing things at each race this year! You learn from each one, and find something good in them all! Go you!
